1. Lack of spiritual growth.

The first sign of a complacent Christian is the lack of spiritual growth, characterized by little interest in deepening their faith or expanding their understanding of Scripture.

Indicators

  • Rarely reads and studies the Bible
  • Only attends church on special occassions
  • Little to no interest in listening to online sermons

2. Weak prayer life

The second sign of a complacent Christian is having a weak or non-existent prayer life.

  • Praying for things that are outside of God's will
  • Praying only before meals
  • Engaging in prayer as a mere ritual rather than a personal interaction with God
  • Prayer without faith behind it

What did Jesus teach about prayer?

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

What else does the Bible say about prayer?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, "16 Rejoice evermore. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

James 1:6-8 says, "6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

3. Lack of Generosity

Get mad all you want, but the truth is, we need to talk about generosity, or the lack thereof. People think nothing about spending their money on a $10 Starbucks coffee, $80 to $200 on brand-name Nike shoes, $800 to $1,000 dollars on a Gucci bag or $1,099 on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. But, when it comes to supporting their church or giving to good causes, hesitation creeps in, revealing a paradox in our spending priorities.

Indicators

  • Christians often adopt the mindset that if they don't donate, others will pick up the slack.
  • Lack of faith: Christians may struggle with trusting that God will provide for their needs if they give generously, leading to a reluctance to donate
  • Selfishness or greed: Some Christians are focused on or misled by material possessions
  • Spiritual immaturity

Early Christians exemplified profound generosity, guided by their understanding of Jesus' teachings. As a result, no one in their community lacked anything. Acts 4:34-35 vividly illustrates this principle:

"34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, 35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need."
